Grantley Adams Airport serves the island of Barbados and is gateway to the eastern Caribbean. It is named after one of the island’s former premiers. It is one of the busiest airports in the Caribbean and has won awards for its service and facilities and was recently renovated. With car hire at Grantley Adams Airport, it is an easy drive to the city of Bridgetown using the ABC highway for 13 km.
Grantley Adams Airport has 2 terminals that form one long building and one terminal is used for arrivals and the second one is used for departures. There is a post office and ATMs and money exchange booths are located throughout the terminal, if you need some extra cash. For business class tickets holders there is the Club Caribbean Executive Lounge and Business Centre, to relax in comfort or work before your flight. There are 18 shops to browse whilst you wait for your flight including Diamonds International and Columbian Emeralds. You can buy clothing at Runway Fashion and gifts at Best of Barbados. Sea Shell has all those last minute items you may need, like snacks and newspapers. If you are hungry, you can choose from 8 food outlets including Christophe’s Cafe and Island Grab’n’Go. For local specialities try the Island Grill and for a taste of the orient try Asia Express. If you want to de-stress, head for the Soothing Touch Spa. For something different, you can visit the Concorde Experience, an aviation museum next to the airport.
Bridgetown is the capital and the largest city in Barbados. It is known for being the island’s business centre and for tourism and rum production. Visit the Bridgetown Port and see the mighty cruise liners arrive and shop for duty free items inside the terminal. Take a stroll along Broad Street and admire the colourful houses and shops as well as the Parliament Building and St Mary’s Church. See the Chamberlain Bridge and browse the Careenage, a marina area with lots of little boutiques and cafes. Try a local cocktail and fantastic food at the Waterfront Cafe. For a little history visit the Barbados Museum and to find out more about the island’s rum production, enjoy the Mount Gay Distillery Tour. Out of the city, you can have great food and enjoy nightlife at St Lawrence Gap and Oistins. Head for the beautiful beaches of Butterfly Beach and Silver Sands for swimming, sunbathing and surfing.
