Limoges is a city on the Vienne River, in Limousin that is known for its medieval enamel work on copper and porcelain. The city also makes special barrels from local oak that are used in the production of Cognac. In the city, you can see the medieval Bridge of St Martial and the remains of the Bishops Palace and the Gallo-roman Amphitheatre. The imposing gothic Cathedral of St Etienne has an unusual octagonal bell tower and look out for the 10th century Crypt of Saint Martial, patron saint of the city. Take a stroll around the Botanic Gardens and admire the incredible Gare de Limoges Benedictins, a train station dating from 1929. The Church of St Michel des Lions is worth a visit for its beautiful stained glass windows and a striking spire with a sphere on top.
