Kavala airport was initially built in 1981 a lot closer to Kavala than it is today. The airport has re-located where it operates today 25km from Kavala, near Chrysoupoli. Kavala airport also bears the name of Alexander the Great – Megas Alexandros. This name came into existence at the airport in 1992. Kavala (International) airport has grown in size making it an international airport. It was at one time only a domestic airport.
You will find at the airport a café, a restaurant and a shop to entertain you while you await the arrival of someone from a plane, you wait for your car hire company to deliver your car, or you await the announcement for boarding your flight.
There were 296,000 passengers travelled through Kavala international airport in 2010, this shows a decrease of 8.6% in 2009.
Kavala airport has more than 250 car parking spaces available for your choosing although it is a paid for car parking system.
You will be pleased to find six car hire offices at the airport, so there is plenty of choice for you to find the right deal for you. One of the car hire companies will help you to plan a travel schedule. They are believers in the fact that if you plan then you will gain the best from your holiday. I believe they are right on this. You find links to online maps also, which will also be invaluable to you if you are new to Greece.
Once you have your car hire sorted, there are so many places in Kavala that you can visit and make your holiday totally adventure filled and fun packed. Station wagon, 4WD and seven seated cars are classed here as the most convenient cars. However, of course the choice is totally up to you which car hire vehicle you wish to rent. The prices are at a very affordable rate for you, guaranteed to be clean and will contain a tank of diesel or petrol to get you on your way.
Now you have your car, where are you going to go? There are shops for you to visit, for example, tea and spice shop. A very old shop, which will have you drawn in by the rich senses and tastes. Mud baths in Krinides. This is a unique, special, luxurious experience. Let old Mother Nature beautify you with the minerals in the earth. This experience requires a level of open mindedness. You will not find a spa treatment quite like this anywhere else. It will be something to remember your trip. However, if mud bathing is not your thing, there is always the island of Thassos nearby. This island has not an airport. You can only get there by what is known as ‘the flying dolphin’. The flying dolphin is a ferry taking half an hour to get to Thassos. You may get to see the ancient aqueduct behind the hills.
Thassos is a Greek fishing town where fish are caught in great numbers.
