Tenerife South Airport previously known as Tenerife Reina Sofia Airport is one of two airports on the island of Tenerife, in Spain’s Canary Islands. It has over 9 million holidaymakers passing through every year. The city of Santa Cruz is 60 Km away, but an easy drive with car hire at Tenerife South Airport.
Tenerife South Airport has one main terminal with 2 floors and attracts tourist from Europe and Russia, especially during the summer months, although Tenerife is considered a year round destination. The airport has a pharmacy and bank for last minute emergencies. There is a play park for children on the ground floor. The tourist information office will provide you with more information about the area and there are information desks should you require assistance. The Montana Rioja VIP lounge can be used by business class passengers or for a small fee. There are a number of shops selling everything from sweets to newspapers and gifts to local goods. You can buy Canarian products at Thinking Tenerife, precious stones at Arte and designer brands at Zona Zero. When you get hungry, there are a few options including Bill Bentley, an English style pub or have pizza at Mama Leones. Tapas are served at Carlsberg Bar or grab an ice cream at La Bense Bornay.
Santa Cruz is a bustling capital city, rather than a tourist attraction but there is still plenty to do and see. There are history museums and art galleries and a planetarium and science centre for a little culture. You can shop and find anything at El Corte Ingles stores or head for the main market where you will find lots of local produce and flowers. Head for the palm tree lined Las Ramblas for a stroll and stop at a cafe and eat al fresco. See a performance at the stunning Santa Cruz de Tenerife Auditorium or find a little tapas bar to relax in. At the port you can watch the huge cruise liners sail in or enjoy the gardens there. Look out for the Torres de Santa Cruz across the skyline and the church of Iglesia de la Conception. Get out of the city with your car hire in Tenerife and head for the beautiful and less crowded beaches at Las Teresitas, just a 20 minute drive away. The black volcanic sand beach at Las Gaviotas is an alternative.
